David Leighton | All About The Music

David Leighton is London based producer, mix engineer and songwriter, who is currently working with multiple styles of music and artists. Coming from a guitarist background, Leighton now works predominantly with commercial Pop, Rock and Indie acts but admits to straying into various forms of electronic based music through collaborations and solo work. He currently works in conjunction with management & production labels around London, whilst also running his own studio based in rural Bedfordshire.
Leighton began his career writing and playing in bands from the tender age of 14, picking up a variation of instruments along the way. He tells us that his multi-instrumentalism always helps when approaching a recording/writing session. Claiming, as a guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboardist he is able to create complete arrangements or simply help with guitar voicings or vocal harmonies for example.
Leighton studied BSc Music Technology at Coventry University, graduating with a 2:1 and an award to assist legendary producers on the Gus Dudgeon Producers Course. Following this he became part of The Animal Farm’s team of Producers based in Bermondsey, London, and also took over RiverRun Studios in Bedfordshire. Since which, he has worked with numerous acts on Single’s, E.P.s, Albums and Demos, many of which have been released through labels and have gained regular radio airplay.
“I am always looking for new acts to work for and with, from any background or genre of music.”
Alongside studio work, Leighton has featured on BBC Introducing for an interview and live acoustic set, as well as attending the recent ‘BBC Introducing Masterclass’ which took place at the world famous Abbey Road Studios. Some collaborations have also led to live shows and releases by Leighton himself, as an artist. A recent release entitled ‘Illuminate’, which was released under the alias ‘Project:Voices’ can still be downloaded on iTunes here.
“David is one of the finest young talents I have come across in recent years” - Dan Turner (Producer/Engineer, Bullet For My Valentine, Cradle Of Filth, The Cardigans, Suede)
“Judging by what David Leighton has put out so far, he looks certain to have a big future, definitely one to watch” - Tom Simkins (BBC Introducing Presenter)
“Leighton has developed an extensive knowledge on how each genre is created and how to achieve the best for each artist he works for” - Paul Richards (Music Critic)
RiverRun Studios is a spacious and professional recording environment located 40 minutes from London. Based around a Pro Tools and Apple Mac Rig, with Focusrite, TLA and Digidesign hardware, the studio is a high-spec, yet affordable recording choice. The self-contained facility boasts a lounge, kitchen area and bathroom/shower facilities alongside the fantastic sounding live room and separate control room. Numerous instruments and amps are available to acts when recording at the studio alongside a large range of new and classic microphones from Shure to AKG to Neumann and Rode.
When in a studio session I will always reach for a Fender Telecaster, you can’t beat the tone of one of those!
As a musician and producer, I am influenced by numerous artists, genres and styles of music, drawing inspiration from Rock, Pop, Electro… the list is endless! With regards to musical heroes and inspirations though, Chris Lord Alge, Bob Rock, Labrinth, Chase and Status and iSHi are all up there for me.
Over the next few months I have various recording sessions, writing projects and releases to look forward to, as well as recently signing up to be a judge at the regional stages of Live and Unsigned UK.
