Billy Sheehan | Bass Icon
Dolphin Music on Mar 7, 2012
He’s worked with Talas, the David Lee Roth Band and the likes of Steve Vai, as if his collaborations could possibly add any more stars to his already sky high bass hero status. Billy Sheehan is another one of the few “real” bassists we are featuring this week for the Dolphin Music bass Week.
Sheehan is possibly best known for his work with the American Rock supergroup, Mr. Big and has been gracing the low ends since the ‘70s. The things this guy does with a bass is beyond incredible… doing them is one thing, but it’s the ways in which he performs that the magic really lies. Chording, two-handed tapping, the clear as day 3 finger picking technique, at such ridiculously high speeds that his hands become a blur, legendary.
Of course his work never goes unnoticed, Sheehan won ‘Best Rock Bass player’ Readers’ poll from Guitar Player Magazine… not once, not twice, three times, four times… but FIVE times for his lead bass.
Playing a variation of styles, from Heavy Rock to Jazz Fusion, Sheehan uses a multitude of guitars, including a number of Fenders, Alvarez Basses, and for Yamaha… well let’s just say that Sheehan owns enough Yamaha basses to feed around 30 bass hungry guitarists, one of which being his iconic Yamaha Attitude Limited 3 in Baby Blue and his signature BB714BS. He is also an endorser of Hartke amplifiers and admits he is totally dependent on his Hartke live setup which usually consists of an AK 115, AK410, HA5500C and LH1000.
The Yamaha BB714BS Signature
The Yamaha BB714BS Bass Guitar guarantees its player a crushing bass tone, no matter their style. The Billy Sheehan signature bass takes all of the great features that make the Attitude what it is, and throws them into this red hot package of beastly bass.

Sheehan’s Hartke LH1000 bass Amp
This bass amp is one of Sheehan’s favourites from Hartke, the LH1000 features a classic 12AX7 Class-A tube design with an intuitive layout that makes control adjustments a piece of cake. A perfect complement to a Hartke bass cab, like Sheehan’s AK115.
